Research Activity

WP1 Identification of skill gaps in the field of cybersecurity in smart grids in the EU

The goal of this work package is to identify the skill gaps in the field of cybersecurity in smart grids in the European Union. The state of the art and current trends in the digitalisation of electrical grids (smart grids) and cybersecurity will be analysed and compared with current education in the combined field of cybersecurity in smart grids. IO1: Report on state of the art, trends and skill gaps in the field of cybersecurity in smart grids in the EU

WP2 Development of the cybersecurity education strategy for smart grids

The goal of this work package is to develop a strategy to enable the matching between the current and future demand of skills necessary for cybersecurity in smart grids and the supply of education content and methodologies coming from education providers. With all the input from the WP1, the strategic roadmap for action plans will be defined and recommendations to education providers, policy makers, and smart grid stakeholders will be provided.

WP3: Designing, developing, and piloting

The goal of this work package is to develop educational/training sessions and the requirements in modern cyber physical security CPS. These sessions specifically highlight the standardized and secure communication system for smart grid complying with the specified smart grid communication/security standards and their real time requirements using a real- time simulator. Real-time simulators are powerful tools that offer a zero-risk, low cost alternative for studying smart grid behavior under a set of different circumstances by implementing a system digital twin concept. Knowledge and insight will be gained from WPs (1,2,4) and support from the state of the art CPS laboratory tools providers, where knowledge serves as the basic organizing structure for cybersecurity content. Challenges in such real-time simulation environments are highlighted. Further, CPS virtual laboratory is offered for distance learning activities.

WP4: Development of the Body of Knowledge and implementation roadmap

WP4 is responsible for development of the Body of Knowledge in a form of educational and training framework and linked tools in order to support academic and continuing education, lifelong and society teaching in the area of cybersecurity in grids. In this WP the intellectual outputs from previous WPs are collated, and BoK is designed uniting the cybersecurity education strategy for smart grids (WP2) and cybersecurity virtual education tools (WP3). WP4 proposes knowledge units, tasks and training to develop skills and competences of cybersecurity in grids for different groups of students, as well as it sets algorithms and tools to apply and test such competencies. The output of this work package is BoK for cybersecurity education in smart grids, including its implementation roadmap.

WP5: Dissemination

The goal of this work package is to carry out dissemination through networks, conferences, publications, and multiplier events to maximise the visibility of the project’s products and outputs to a wider national and international audience. The multiplier events, which are a main element and will be arranged within the project, are spread all over Europe and target computer scientists and electrical engineers from academia and industry.
