\nThe forthcoming months will be a busy time at our University. In addition to teaching and research, several processes are underway to modernise the University’s operations: profiling, a new strategy and organisational structure.<\/b><\/p>\n

Yliopiston kannalta on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4, ett\u00e4 meneill\u00e4\u00e4n olevat kehityshankkeet onnistuvat parhaalla mahdollisella tavalla. N\u00e4in voimme luoda meille kaikille entist\u00e4kin paremman ja innostavamman ty\u00f6-, opiskelu- ja tutkimusymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n. Laadukkaana ja innovatiivisena toimijana Vaasan yliopisto voi menesty\u00e4 ja kehitty\u00e4 jatkossakin \u2013 meille kaikille yhteinen tavoite ja t\u00e4rke\u00e4 teht\u00e4v\u00e4 tulevien kuukausien aikana.<\/p>\n

On selv\u00e4\u00e4, ett\u00e4 tulevat muutokset her\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4t innostuksen ja mielenkiinnon lis\u00e4ksi my\u00f6s ep\u00e4ilyksi\u00e4 tulevasta toimintamallista. T\u00e4m\u00e4 on luonnollista ja hyvin ymm\u00e4rrett\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4kin, sill\u00e4 uudet ja tuntemattomat asiat saavat helposti varuilleen. Uudistumisprosessia suunniteltaessa olemme tunnistaneet n\u00e4m\u00e4 seikat ja haluammekin ottaa koko yliopiston henkil\u00f6kunnan ja opiskelijat mukaan t\u00e4m\u00e4n muutoksen tekemiseen. T\u00e4t\u00e4 kautta uudistumisesta tulee meille kaikille yhteinen hanke, jonka onnistumiseen me kaikki voimme vaikuttaa.<\/p>\n

Avaamme useita erilaisia vaikutuskanavia, joiden kautta koko yhteis\u00f6mme p\u00e4\u00e4see mukaan muutosprosessiin ja vaikuttamaan asioihin. N\u00e4it\u00e4 kanavia ovat mm. kaikille avoimet tiedotus- ja keskustelutilaisuudet, blogikirjoitukset ja niiden kommentointi, marraskuun aikana kokoontuvat edustukselliset ty\u00f6ryhm\u00e4t, jotka tuottavat n\u00e4kemyksi\u00e4 ja sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4 uudistuksiin, avoin ja aktiivinen keskustelu yliopiston sidosryhmien kanssa sek\u00e4 ulkoisten asiantuntijoiden hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4minen muutosprosessien eteenp\u00e4in viemisess\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Profilointi<\/h3>\n

Laadimme parhaillaan Suomen Akatemialle yliopistojen profilointiin liittyv\u00e4\u00e4 rahoitushakemusta. T\u00e4m\u00e4n kansallisen tason hankkeen tavoitteena on lis\u00e4t\u00e4 yliopistojen v\u00e4list\u00e4 yhteisty\u00f6t\u00e4 ja v\u00e4hent\u00e4\u00e4 tutkimuksen ja opetuksen p\u00e4\u00e4llekk\u00e4isyyksi\u00e4. Pyrkimyksen\u00e4 on olemassa olevien resurssien parempi hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4minen ja p\u00e4\u00e4llekk\u00e4isten toimintojen v\u00e4hent\u00e4minen.<\/p>\n

T\u00e4ss\u00e4 hankkeessa l\u00e4hdet\u00e4\u00e4n liikkeelle yliopistojen v\u00e4lisill\u00e4 keskusteluilla, joita Vaasan yliopiston osalta k\u00e4yd\u00e4\u00e4n ainakin Oulun yliopiston ja Lappeenrannan teknillisen yliopiston suuntaan. Pyrimme my\u00f6s lis\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n yhteisty\u00f6t\u00e4 Vaasan alueen korkeakoulujen kanssa, ja erityisesti VAMKin kanssa meill\u00e4 onkin hyv\u00e4t mahdollisuudet lis\u00e4t\u00e4 kaikkia osapuolia hy\u00f6dytt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 yhteisty\u00f6t\u00e4. Kansainv\u00e4list\u00e4 yhteisty\u00f6t\u00e4 on puolestaan luontevaa kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 naapurimme Uumajan yliopiston kanssa, ja t\u00e4h\u00e4n tullaankin panostamaan nyt entist\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n.<\/p>\n

Konkreettisia yliopistojen ja korkeakoulujen yhteisty\u00f6n muotoja voidaan l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 niin opetuksesta, tutkimuksesta kuin my\u00f6s infrastruktuurin osalta. Esimerkkein\u00e4 voidaan mainita opiskelua nopeuttavat tutkintopolut, yhteiset verkkoa hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4v\u00e4t kurssit yleens\u00e4 ja erityisesti kes\u00e4opetuksen osalta, tutkimuksen painopistealueiden selkeytt\u00e4minen, sek\u00e4 tilojen tehokkaampi yhteisk\u00e4ytt\u00f6. Lis\u00e4\u00e4ntyv\u00e4n yhteisty\u00f6n kautta meille kaikille avautuu my\u00f6s entist\u00e4 parempia tilaisuuksia tutustua muiden yliopistojen opiskelijoihin ja henkil\u00f6kuntaan.<\/p>\n

Uusi strategia<\/h3>\n

Toisena t\u00e4rke\u00e4n\u00e4 rinnakkaisena prosessina on meneill\u00e4\u00e4n yliopiston uuden strategian luominen. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 l\u00e4hdemme liikkeelle luomalla yhteisen ja innostavan, vuoteen 2025 ulottuvan vision. Sen l\u00e4ht\u00f6teemaksi on valittu Energizing Business and Society<\/em>. T\u00e4t\u00e4 ty\u00f6stet\u00e4\u00e4n parhaillaan ty\u00f6ryhmiss\u00e4, ja toivommekin ideoita ja ajatuksia mahdollisimman laajalta joukolta yliopistolaisia.<\/p>\n

Korkeatasoinen ja yhteiskunnallisesti vaikuttava tutkimus ja opetus ovat luonnollisesti yliopiston vision ytimess\u00e4. My\u00f6s energia ja kest\u00e4v\u00e4n kehityksen teema liittyv\u00e4t l\u00e4heisesti visiomme. Sijaitseehan Vaasassa ja sen ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ss\u00e4 Pohjoismaiden suurin energia- ja ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6alan teollinen keskittym\u00e4. Yliopisto haluaa olla monipuolinen ja laadukas partneri t\u00e4ss\u00e4 ekosysteemiss\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Vision saavuttamiseksi luomme strategiaa, eli polun, jota kulkemalla p\u00e4\u00e4semme asettamaamme haastavaan tavoitteeseen. Strategiaa toteutetaan siihen sis\u00e4ltyvien keskeisten teemojen kautta. N\u00e4ihin kuuluvat akateemisten vahvuuksien edelleen vahvistaminen, monipuolinen kansainv\u00e4listyminen, digitalisaatioon liittyv\u00e4 osaaminen ja ennakkoluuloton hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4minen, yritt\u00e4jyyden ja tutkimustulosten kaupallistamisen edist\u00e4minen sek\u00e4 panostus erinomaisen ty\u00f6ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n kautta menestymiseen.<\/p>\n

Organisaation rakenne<\/h3>\n

Kolmantena kehityskohteena on koko yliopiston organisaation rakenne. Jatkossakin sen tulee tukea uutta visiota ja strategian toteutusta. Yliopistopalveluiden osalta on jo usean kuukauden ajan suunniteltu uutta asiakaspalvelul\u00e4ht\u00f6ist\u00e4 toimintamallia. Ty\u00f6 on edennyt hyvin ja sen tuloksia tullaan n\u00e4kem\u00e4\u00e4n viel\u00e4 kuluvan syksyn aikana. My\u00f6s koko opetuksen ja tutkimuksen organisointia yliopiston tasolla tullaan kehitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n osana meneill\u00e4\u00e4n olevia muutosprosesseja.<\/p>\n

Vaasan yliopisto katsoo valoisaan tulevaisuuteen. N\u00e4emme siell\u00e4 monia mahdollisuuksia, mutta my\u00f6s haasteita, joiden ratkaisemisessa osaamisemme voi olla keskeisess\u00e4 roolissa. Yhteiskuntamme kehittyy, ja nousemassa on uudenlaisia arvoja sek\u00e4 uusia tapoja tuottaa arvoa, niin liiketoiminnassa kuin muillakin yhteiskunnan osa-alueilla. N\u00e4ihin mahdollisuuksiin meill\u00e4 on erinomainen mahdollisuus tarttua yliopistona, jonka liiketoimintaan liittyv\u00e4ll\u00e4 osaamisella on vahvat rajapinnat keskeisiin teknologioihin ja yhteiskunnan muutosprosesseihin.<\/p>\n

By working together, our University will modernise and succeed<\/h2>\n

The forthcoming months will be a busy time at our University. In addition to teaching and research, several processes are underway to modernise the University’s operations: profiling, a new strategy and organisational structure.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is important for the University that the ongoing development projects are successful in the best possible way. This will enable us to create an even better, more engaging environment for work, study and research for everyone. As a high-quality, innovative organisation, the University of Vaasa can succeed and develop in the future \u2013 an objective shared by all of us and an important task in forthcoming months.<\/p>\n

It is clear that the upcoming changes will lead to excitement and interest but also to doubts regarding the future operating model. This is natural and very understandable \u2013 new and unfamiliar things are reason for caution. When we planned the modernisation process, we identified these factors and we want to involve all of the University’s personnel and students in making this change. This will enable modernisation to become a joint project for all of us and we can all play a part in its success.<\/p>\n

We will open several different channels to enable our entire community to get involved in the change process and to make an impact on things that matter. These channels include communication and discussion events that are open to everyone, blog articles and comments, representative working groups to be convened in November to produce outlooks and content for the modernisation process, open and active discussion with the University’s stakeholders, and using external consultants to move the change processes forward.<\/p>\n

Profiling<\/h3>\n

We are currently in the process of drafting a financing application for submission to the Academy of Finland in relation to university profiling. The objective of this national-level project is to increase collaboration between universities and reduce overlaps in research and teaching. The aim is to make better use of existing resources and to reduce overlapping functions.<\/p>\n

The project will begin with discussions between universities. In the first phase, the University of Vaasa will be entering into discussions with the University of Oulu and the Lappeenranta University of Technology. We will also strive to increase collaboration with the higher education institutions in the Vaasa region. There are good opportunities for increasing the amount of collaboration with the Vaasa University of Applied Sciences for the benefit of all parties involved. As regards international collaboration, it is natural for us to develop our work with our neighbour, the University of Ume\u00e5, and we will increase our investment in this area.<\/p>\n

Tangible forms of collaboration with universities and other higher education institutions can be identified in the fields of teaching, research and infrastructure. Some examples worthy of note include study paths that speed up studies, joint online courses in general and for summer teaching in particular, increasing the clarity of the focus areas for research, and sharing premises more effectively. Increasing collaboration will provide all of us with better opportunities to familiarise ourselves with the students and personnel at other universities.<\/p>\n

New strategy<\/h3>\n

Another important ongoing process is the creation of the University’s new strategy. We will begin this by creating a common, engaging vision that will stretch to 2025. The initial theme will be Energizing Business and Society<\/em>. Work is currently underway in working groups and we hope to receive ideas and thoughts from as large a group of people as possible within the University.<\/p>\n

High-level, societally relevant research and teaching form the natural core of the University’s vision. The themes of energy and sustainable development are also closely connected to our vision. After all, Vaasa and its surrounding region is host to the Nordic region’s largest industrial cluster in the energy and environment sector. The University aims to be a versatile, high-quality partner in this ecosystem.<\/p>\n

To achieve this vision we are creating a strategy: a path that will lead us to challenging objective that we have set for ourselves. The strategy will be implemented via the key themes that are identified within it. These include further reinforcing academic strengths, diverse internationalisation, expertise related to digitalisation and unprejudiced utilisation of digitalisation, promoting entrepreneurship and the commercialisation of research outputs, and investments in success via a superb working environment.<\/p>\n

Organisational structure<\/h3>\n

The third area for development is the organisational structure of the entire University. It the future, it will support the implementation of the new vision and strategy. As regards university services, a new customer-service-oriented operating model has been planned for several months now. The work has shown good progress and the results will become visible during the autumn. The organisation of all of the University’s teaching and research activities will also be developed as part of the ongoing change processes.<\/p>\n

The University of Vaasa is looking toward a bright future. We can see several opportunities, as well as challenges, which we will require our expertise to overcome. Our society is developing and new values and ways of creating value are arising, both in business and in other parts of society. We are in an excellent position to seize on these opportunities as our University has business-related expertise that is well integrated with key technologies and societal change processes.<\/p>\n
